In my role as an EAL/D Support Teacher I work with students in years 3-6 to support those who speak a language other than English, as their first language. I work with these students to help develop their English language skills and confidence across the curriculum, in order to make it easier for them to access, understand and participate fully in our school curriculum. At Lansvale East PS we strive to provide a collaborative and inclusive learning environment, thus I team teach with the classroom teachers and support our students within the safety of their classroom environment. I have a passion to ensure all students are included and successful at school and beyond. I look forward to working with our students this year!

I love the colour green. My favourite magazine is ‘Breathe and make time for yourself’. I enjoy living a healthy lifestyle, which includes F45 Training and eating foods that nourish my body. I am working on being brave around Sade and Lenny. Birds scare me. I love spending time with my family and friends; and listening to lots of different types of music. Dancing makes me happy. Being a teacher motivates me to be a better teacher, leader, person and friend. I am grateful to be a part of Lansvale East Public School.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Starting primary school

Children who have a positive start to school are likely to engage and experience ongoing academic and social success.

When to start

Children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5 on or before 31 July that year. By law, all children must be in compulsory schooling by their 6th birthday.

When your child starts school is an individual decision. You may wish to discuss this with your child's preschool teacher, carer, doctor or your local primary school. Our teachers are trained to work with your child regardless of their age or level of development.

Children develop at different rates and learn skills in different ways. Your school will respond to the needs, learning styles and rates of progress of individual students. Schools also plan learning experiences based on the skills students bring with them to school.

Orientation Day

Most schools have orientation days towards the end of the year to welcome children starting Kindergarten the following year. Many schools also have transition to Kindergarten programs over several weeks in the second half of the year. Contact your local school for details.

The school year starts in late January, after the summer vacation period. The school calendar lists school term dates.

Preparing your child

You can do a lot to help prepare your child for Kindergarten before their big 'first day'. The following skills are useful for children starting Kindergarten. Everyone develops at a different pace so this is only a guide and not all children will have these skills.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Taronga Zoo 2018

In classroom this semester students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been learning about the needs of living things and their habitats. On Tuesday 3rd July, students had the opportunity to consolidate their learning, by exploring the many amazing animals of Taronga Zoo. Students had a wonderful time visiting and learning about all the animals from Australia and around the world and even had a chance for a face to face.

Young people today are immersed in digital technologies. They use the internet and mobile phones to socialise, study, exchange ideas and play. While online activity has many benefits, there are also risks.

To help your children stay safe online, Lansvale East Public School is hosting a Cybersmart Outreach-Internet Safety Awareness Presentation. Designed for parents, teachers and students, this presentation is provided by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (the ACMA) as part of a national program of cybersmart initiatives.

The Cybersmart Outreach-Internet Safety Awareness presentation is thorough and non-technical. It covers a range of issues including:

* the ways children use the internet and emerging technologies

*potential risks for children online, such as cyberbullying, identity theft, inappropriate contact and exposure to inappropriate content

* tips to help children stay safe online

Opera House Excursion

On Thursday March 25th, Lansvale East had our annual Opera House excursion. Students commenced the excursion with a walk through the Botanical Gardens, with K/1S and 1/2T examining the locations discussed in the Pamela Allen book 'Alexander's Outing', and 3/4K, 5/6C and 5/6S looking at the historical and Aboriginal perspestives of the Gardens.

After lunch was the performance, an exciting Japanese show titled 'The Voyage'. The students enjoyed the exposure to another culture, particularly the interaction with the cast as they were able to sing along!

Perhaps the highlight of the excursion (for the teachers at least!) was the compliment received for the outstanding behaviour of the Lansvale East students. Well done, you made us proud!

Community Walks

As part of their HSIE units this term, K/1S and 3/4K have both recently completed walks around our community. These walks were to allow the students to learn about the different services within the Lansvale community and to enjoy the sights and sounds of our community. Both classes thoroughly enjoyed this exciting learning experience!

Harmony Day 2010

On Thursday 17th March, Lansvale East celebrated Harmony Day. Our Harmony Day celebrated the multiculturalism that exists in our school and throughout Australia .

Students participated in a variety of activities which included

decorating the Harmony Day symbol,
locating their country of origin on a world map,
painting the flag of their country of origin,
Aboriginal dancing,
Vietnamese singing.

Mnay thanks to the Hines family for generously donating some fantastic cardboard paper chain people that we were able to use during our celebrations.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is a special day where Australians celebrate multiculturalism the way we look after each other. It is a day to universally say 'NO!' to racism. The underlying them is You + Me = Us.

Harmony Day is officially held on March 21st. Lansvale East Public School will celebrate on Thursday March 18th. Students can wear orange clothes on the day - the colour of joy and celebration! Classes will participate in rotating activities from Vietanamese singing to Aboriginal dance to mapping our cultural origins. Students will also receive a Harmony Day gift!

We celebrate Harmony Day because Australia truly is a multicultural and diverse nation. 23% of our population were born overseas and there are more than 200 languages spoken in Australia other than English. Lansvale East families come from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and speak many different languages. That is more than enough reason to celebrate!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back students and families of Lansvale East Public School! 2010 is already shaping up to be an exciting year! On Tuesday, 2nd February Lansvale East held the annual swimming carnival, results will be posted shortly.

Year 6 will start our fundraising with a Yummy Thursday on 11th February, selling Frozen Yoghurt cones for 50c at lunch time.

All students have been given a blue communication folder this week. This folder will be used for students to bring all notes and money envelopes to and from school. Please check your child's folder daily, and make sure they return their folder to school every day.

We look forward to working with our families this year to make sure our school has a successful and educational year!

This is a state-wide program involving government and non-government schools and represents significant funding from the Commonwealth Government to New South Wales schools, as well as a co-contribution from the State Government.

Common to all schools in this National Partnership is the objective of raising overall attainment so that NSW primary school students in Stages 2 and 3 gain reading or numeracy skills to actively engage in school and in society.

Our school executive has participated in a recently developed school leadership program and will work with teachers to support whole school strategies aimed at improving our student outcomes in reading. Teachers will have ongoing professional development to support a new literacy program, Focus on Reading, a whole class program, and for students experiencing difficulty in reading we are developing individual learning plans and will access a specific literacy intervention program called Mulitlit. Gillawarna Success

Last week was a splendid week for Lansvale East performing arts! Our students sang and danced their way through matinees and evening shows demonstrating great behaviour as well as enormous talent. Our singers were a part of the combined choir which sweetly performed many songs and our dance group entertained everyone with their high energy celebration of life and dance. We are all enormously proud of all of our performers and thank them for representing LEPS so very well.

Well done to all of our performers and thank you to Miss Simmons, Mrs Ngyuen, Mrs Dodds and all the teachers and families that helped make Gillawarna a huge success.

Tournament of the Minds

On Saturday 29th August, a small group of students from Lansvale East participated in the Tournament of the Minds competition at the University of Western Sydney, Bankstown campus. The competition involved the students completing a long term challenge, which was completed after school and on Sunday afternoons for 5 weeks, and a spontaneous challenge seen on the day of the competition. The students chose the challenge from the Math Engineering discipline, where they were to create a communication system that would carry a small ball over two obstacles. The students also had to create a short performance on their challenge, where they were to write a script and act it out in front of a judging panel. The team performed exceptionally well, making myself and Lansvale East proud! Congratulations team!

End of Term Footy BBQ

PDFFooty BBQ Order Form(PDF 85Kb)The next exciting fundraising activity Year 6 will be holding is a ‘Football BBQ'! As part of the Grand Final fever, students will be allowed to show their support for their favourite team by wearing a football jersey, shirt or jacket. As PSSA is continuing on the day, all students are required to bring the proper school sports uniform to change into before they travel to their PSSA venue.

The BBQ will be held at lunch time, Friday, 2^nd October. Students can purchase a Halal sausage on a bread roll for $3.00 by filling out the note below and returning it to their class teacher by Wednesday, 30th September.

Year 6 would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing ladies in the canteen for offering to cook the sausages for our fundraiser!

Lansvale East has been selected to participate in the National Partnership for Literacy and Numeracy. Our focus for this program will be improving student outcomes in reading.

The National Partnership also requires us to undertake a school self-evaluation. As part of this evaluation process we will be asking students, parents and staff to complete a survey. As part of ensuring student awareness of the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Stage 3 students (Years 5 and 6) will be participating in the MUNCH (Modify and Utilise Nutrition in Community Health) program, run by Fairfield City Leisure Centre, to be held on Thursday, 13th August at 10.30am. This interactive presentation has been designed to reinforce the importance of health and fitness, and give them the confidence to make the right decisions relating to their eating and exercise choices.

Don't forget, in order to pay for the hire of the buses, students need to make a one-off payment of $25 to cover the cost for the term, or pay $2.50 per week. Parramatta Eels Clinic: K-1

After the succesful clinics held for years 2 to 6, Parramatta Eels return to teach our Kindergarten and Year 1 students football skills! Starting Monday, June 15, our youngest students will be participating in the Eels football clinics. The 3 week clinics cost $3, and all children receive a gift at the end of the program. We hope to see some future NRL stars in the making!

Education Week Celebrations

On Friday 29^th May, we held our Open classrooms where families were invited into the classrooms of Lansvale East. We were very lucky to have lots of visitors including mums and dads, brothers and sisters and grandparents too (there are some photos below). Not only does this make the children feel special, it shows the community's support of this great school.

In addition to our Open Classrooms, we also held our Education Week Assembly on Friday. Awards were presented to the many participants in the Science Fair, who submitted projects ranging from telescopes, to alien dioramas to written research projects. We also heard some very special speeches from our Stage 3 students on what Lansvale East Public School means to them.

CSIRO Science Shows

On Thursday May 28th, the CSIRO came to visit and lead our Science Shows. Students learned about a variety of scientific areas including energy and forensics. As well as addressing syllabus outcomes, children were exposed to experts in the Science field whose enthusiasm for their work was obvious. Peter and Mitch, the instructors, were clearly passionate Scientists and this rubbed off on the children as they watched and participated in the many experiments. The shows were both educational and entertaining and students were buzzing in the playground as they discussed what they had seen.

On Wednesday May 27th, students participated in a variety of hands on lessons across the school. They visited different classrooms and participated in a number of activities from creating stars from toothpicks, to handling slime or creating lemon electrical circuits.
